I know I just did this less than 2 years ago, but I have changed hosts for this site again.
The host that I moved to was great for the first few months, but after that the service became unreliable. I moved all of my sites to that hosts as the domains came up for renewal. It wasn’t until I had already moved some of them that the issues arose. I think the company was bought out by a larger company around this time. If I recall, it took over a month to move my last site due to some bug and they were swamped with so many tickets they couldn’t get to mine quickly. Once the sites were up, they ran smoothly until last fall when the sites started going down. It’t not just this blog, it’s my podcasts that are unavailable for long periods of time.
As much of a pain as it will be to move 6 sites, I’m going to bite the bullet and try to move them all over the next couple of weeks. This site seems to load so much faster than it did before. Hopefully, it’ll be reliable. The host has a lot of good reviews online, but so did the other one.
Here’s hoping I won’t have to do this again anytime soon.

You probably didn’t notice, but the site has been down for the past 3 weeks or so. I decided to move all of my domain registrations and hosting accounts to a new company, because the costs were getting out of hand at the old company. This domain was set to expire on August 2, so I transferred it over to the new company a few days in advance. I didn’t back up my site the way I should have, so I thought it was going to be a pain to re-create it in its new home. I turned out not to be so bad at all. I delayed it for a while, but then I realized I needed to go ahead and get started on it so I can continue my streak of having at least 1 post per month for the past 11 years.
I’ll spend the next few weeks getting everything running the way it used to, the best I can remember it. I may take this opportunity to make some changes. Hopefully, I’ll make more frequent updates. Hopefully, nothing broke and everyone is actually seeing this. 🙂

I didn’t realize it until a month after the fact, but this site turned 10 years old in August. Time flies, doesn’t it?
I remember trying to decide which platform to use before deciding on Movable Type. Now I’m using WordPress. I remember switching hosts at some point, but I don’t remember why. I’m sure it’s in the archives somewhere. I’ve gone through at least a couple of different redesigns.
Blogging isn’t as popular as it used to be, but I hope I’m still doing some form of this 10 years from now. It’s a good way to help remember things that happened to me. I’m going to try to write more often in the future, but I’m pretty sure I’ve said that before :).
Over the past few days I’ve made a few little changes to the site. I mostly copied things I’ve seen other people do. The site may be slightly more modern now.
I added an option to the sidebar to subscribe to new posts by email.
I also added Disqus comments. I thought about adding Disqus a couple of years ago, but I didn’t like the idea of having something other than WordPress manage my comments. Now, I don’t really care. I sign in to Disqus when I comment on sites that support it.
Lastly, in a few places I made cosmetic fixes to issues that have been bugging me for a while. It’s not perfect, but it’s better. Note: I test this site with Chrome. I’m not responsible for what you see if you’re using an inferior browser.

I guess Movable Type pissed me off one too many times, so I just decided to try something different. I had been working some on trying to finalize those design changes I started on a while back. Yesterday I tried to upgrade to Movable Type 4.1 and things got screwed up. I wasn’t in a mood to try to figure out how to get things right again, so I decided to switch to something else. It gave me a chance to redesign the site and switch to a new platform. I decided on WordPress. I’m sure I’ll have issues with WordPress, but for now I’m happy. I even decided to pick out a theme from their website instead of spending a lot of time coming up with one on my own. One of the reasons I wasn’t blogging as much is that I wasn’t happy with the look of the site. Now I won’t be worrying about that. I’ll get the other pages up sooner or later.
