LKDC is Back!

Friday, August 21st, 2015 1 comment

You probably didn’t notice, but the site has been down for the past 3 weeks or so.  I decided to move all of my domain registrations and hosting accounts to a new company, because the costs were getting out of hand at the old company.  This domain was set to expire on August 2, so I transferred it over to the new company a few days in advance.  I didn’t back up my site the way I should have, so I thought it was going to be a pain to re-create it in its new home.  I turned out not to be so bad at all.  I delayed it for a while, but then I realized I needed to go ahead and get started on it so I can continue my streak of having at least 1 post per month for the past 11 years.

I’ll spend the next few weeks getting everything running the way it used to, the best I can remember it.  I may take this opportunity to make some changes.  Hopefully, I’ll make more frequent updates.  Hopefully, nothing broke and everyone is actually seeing this. 🙂

Changing Hosts Soon

I have several ideas for topics I want to write about, but I’m planning on changing hosts and for some reason I’ve been putting off writing until I do that. Hopefully, within the next month I’ll get that taken care of.

10 Years

Monday, October 6th, 2014 No comments

I didn’t realize it until a month after the fact, but this site turned 10 years old in August.  Time flies, doesn’t it?

I remember trying to decide which platform to use before deciding on Movable Type.  Now I’m using WordPress.  I remember switching hosts at some point,  but I don’t remember why.  I’m sure it’s in the archives somewhere.  I’ve gone through at least a couple of different redesigns.

Blogging isn’t as popular as it used to be, but I hope I’m still doing some form of this 10 years from now.  It’s a good way to help remember things that happened to me.  I’m going to try to write more often in the future, but I’m pretty sure I’ve said that before :).

Over the past few days I’ve made a few little changes to the site. I mostly copied things I’ve seen other people do. The site may be slightly more modern now.

I added an option to the sidebar to subscribe to new posts by email.

I also added Disqus comments. I thought about adding Disqus a couple of years ago, but I didn’t like the idea of having something other than WordPress manage my comments. Now, I don’t really care. I sign in to Disqus when I comment on sites that support it.

Lastly, in a few places I made cosmetic fixes to issues that have been bugging me for a while. It’s not perfect, but it’s better. Note: I test this site with Chrome. I’m not responsible for what you see if you’re using an inferior browser.

A Brand New Car

Thursday, June 19th, 2008 1 comment

Well, not brand new but new to me. I finally got a new car yesterday.

My mom’s car was stolen recently and when she got it back it was in pretty bad shape. Since I had planned on getting a new car in the near future, I let her have the old car that I had been driving since 1999 until she’s ready to get something else. I just had to get a new car earlier than I had planned, but oh well.

My new car is a gray Nissan Altima. I realized today that a lot of people around here drive Altimas, probably because MSU employees get discounts on Nissan cars. It had 29000 miles on it. It drives well. It has a lot of room. It’s great for me. The previous owner left his Sirius satellite radio receiver in the car and it’s still activated. It’s not something I would have bought on my own, but since it’s there I’m going to use it. When it gets deactivated, I’ll start up my own account.

Anyway, I’m happy and I’m itching to go on a road trip.

WordPress 2.5.1

Saturday, May 10th, 2008 No comments

I upgraded to WordPress 2.5 when it came out in late March/early April or whenever.  I liked it, but there were problems.  I kept getting JavaScript errors and I would loose formatting when I edited certain pages.

When WordPress 2.5.1 came out a few weeks ago I immediately upgraded.  This update is such a drastic improvement visually and I haven’t had any problems using it so far.

Of course, people that just come here to read the entries won’t see any difference.  However, if you use WordPress on your site and haven’t upgraded to 2.5.1, don’t wait any longer.

What’s Old is New

I guess Movable Type pissed me off one too many times, so I just decided to try something different.  I had been working some on trying to finalize those design changes I started on a while back.  Yesterday I tried to upgrade to Movable Type 4.1 and things got screwed up.  I wasn’t in a mood to try to figure out how to get things right again, so I decided to switch to something else.  It gave me a chance to redesign the site and switch to a new platform. I decided on WordPress.  I’m sure I’ll have issues with WordPress, but for now I’m happy.  I even decided to pick out a theme from their website instead of spending a lot of time coming up with one on my own.  One of the reasons I wasn’t blogging as much is that I wasn’t happy with the look of the site.  Now I won’t be worrying about that.  I’ll get the other pages up sooner or later.

Stack Overflow Problem Solved…I Think

Friday, September 7th, 2007 2 comments

I think I may have solved the “Stack overflow at line: 1590” problem. If I include a picture of the cover of a game, movie, or book I usually link it to the Amazon page for that item. I don’t typically advertise it, but the link is there. Amazon also gives you a piece of code that you can use to display a more information about that product if a someone mouses over the link. Lately, I’ve stuck that code into my entries when I’ve remembered. Apparently, there were 2 times in August 2007 when I did that. The monthly archive pages put all of the entries for that month together, so the code shows up twice in the archives for that month. It looks like having that show up twice may have been what caused the error. It really only needs to show up once per page, so I’ll use it on a per page basis and not a per entry basis. I may just get rid of it altogether.

By the way, the code I’m talking about begins with an opening “script” tag and ends with a closing “noscript” tag.

Stack Overflow

Something about the August 2007 archive page causes the error “Stack overflow at line: 1590” in IE7. The keeps coming back every time I click the Ok button, so I have to go into the Task Maganer and shut down IE. At least I don’t have to restart the whole system. I haven’t had any problems so far with Firefox or Safari (imagine that) and the other archives I checked are okay. It’s not something that I’m doing on purpose. When I get a chance I’ll try to figure out what’s causing it.

Update, 9/7
I did find out what was causing the problem for me at least. It looks like it was some code. I wrote about it in this entry.

Pardon My Mess

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007 No comments

Lately I’ve been experimenting with the look of the website and the new features of Movable Type. I had created a style using a style generator and thought would be okay with a few tweaks, but then I realized that it looked like crap in Firefox and Safari. I want to keep blogging while I figured out what I wanted to do, so I’m basically going back to the default style / templates. Hopefully the plain white won’t be there for long, but I don’t know how much time I’ll have to spend on this over the next few days.

I would say pardon my progress, but I’m not sure that what I’m doing can be called progress. Also, I hate those “Pardon My Progress” signs. There’s so much construction happening on campus, the progress gets in the way sometimes. The Student Union on campus is being renovated. It makes navigating around that part of campus a little bit of a pain. There was one one of those “Pardon My Progress” signs outside of the Union a while back. Not only are they inconveniencing me, but they’re being smug little smart asses about it. At least they’ll be finished with that building soon.
