HBO does have some good original programming. Over the past few weeks I have taken the time to watch two miniseries that I had never gotten a chance to see: Band of Brothers and From the Earth to the Moon.
Band of Brothers is a 10-part series that details the World War II experiences of an American group of soldiers called Easy Company. The series is based on real events and all of the characters are based on real people. You see brief interviews with actual members of Easy Company before each episode. The battles scenes were pretty intense and some reminded me of playing Call of Duty. I don’t remember being bored or thinking that I was tired of watching at any point.
From the Earth to the Moon is a 12-part series that chronicles the space race of the 1960’s and 1970’s. Their goal was to show the events in a way that they had never been shown before, so they don’t focus only on the astronauts. Instead of detailing the Apollo 13 disaster from the astronauts’ perspectives, they showed it from the perspectives of journalists that covered the story. One episode focuses on the wives of the astronauts and another focuses on the people that designed the lunar module. I learning a lot of things about the space program that I never knew before. There were a couple of episodes that seemed to drag on a little bit, but I was probably just a little distracted at the time.
Tom Hanks was a producer on both series and you’ll see plenty of recognizable faces. I definitely recommend them both if you have the time.

Another relaxing afternoon. I’ve spent a little time working with Google SiteMaps, so hopefully Google will be able to crawl the site more easily.
I’ve been watching the first season of Six Feet Under. It’s morbid, but fascinating.
WoW is just as fun as I remember it. Maybe I can get in an extended session within the next few days.

The phrase “Fighting crime in a future time” has been in my memory and pops into my head at random times (not very often, though). I don’t think I knew where it came from until tonight. I was in Blockbuster and saw C.O.P.S. on DVD. This is an animated series that aired from 1988 to 1989 (yes, I’m that old) and has nothing to do with the reality show Cops. It’s one of those things that come up that make you think of your childhood and the good old days. I’m sure I’ll rent it eventually, but I wonder if I’ll even like it. We’ll see.

The first half of the 2-day season premiere was awesome. They killed off 2 major characters in the first 15 minutes. They just happened to be 2 of my favorites characters on the show. I think the preview for tomorrow night gave away something big, but I’m still looking forward to it. Adios for now.

Somehow the following entry from December 28 was deleted. I am reposting it here.
Christmas was ok. It’s just not the same without my sister around. I’ve spent so many hours recently watching DVD’s.
For my birthday and Christmas I got:
• money
• Firefly The Complete Series
• Tales of Symphonia (Gamecube game) and the strategy guide
• Pearl Jam Single Video Theory (DVD)
• Star Trek The Next Generation The Complete Seasons 1-7
Tomorrow I head back to Starkville. I’ve got about a week of freedom left before I have to think about work again. Hopefully, this time next year I won’t be living in Starkville anymore. Time to start pimping my resume out again.
All in all, it’s been a pretty good year. Next year will be better.

So last week was Thanksgiving week. I pretty much had the whole week off. I did as little real work as I could get away with. After pouring more money into my car, I drove it to Jackson and didn’t have any major problems. Whenever I started hearing noises, I just turned my music up louder so I wouldn’t hear them.
Some of the highlights and lowlights of the week:
watched season 1 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer
started season 2 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (“I hate that girl.”)
watched Empire Falls
ordered tons of crap online
read Salem’s Lot
watched all the episodes of Smallville that I had missed
watched almost all the episodes of Lost that I had missed
cleaned my apartment some
everybody noticing how the weight I’ve lost
got to see my sister and brother-in-law
my mom and I watching one of her bowls shatter in front of our eyes
being able to sleep as late as I wanted to 6 mornings in a row
got gas for $1.97 a gallon
It was weird seeing all the changes that some parts of Clinton have gone through since the last time I had seen them.
I finally moved into the 21st century and got a DVD burner I’m sure I’ll be burning stuff like crazy over the next few weeks.
Finals are next week and then the semester is over.

The week after I saw Serenity I started watching Firefly and when I finished I was left wanting more. Too bad there are only 14 episodes. I want to watch the whole series over again. I need to buy the box set so I’ll have my own copy. I checked Amazon.com and it looks like Serenity will be out in time for Christmas. That’s pretty good turnaround considering the movie just came out in September. This week I hope to begin watching season 1 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I hear that it’s not the best season, but I have to start somewhere. If I like it I may watch Angel.
The new book in the George R.R. Martin series “A Song of Ice and Fire” came out last week. I hear that it’s only about half the story it was originally intended to be. I’m not in any hurry to buy it. I have enough books that I need to read first.
Gas prices are dropping.
It looks like I’m going to have more free time beginning now. I’ll have to find some way to pass the time. You know what they say about idle hands. It’s weird because when I was a student this would probably be the most stressful time of the semester.
I started on Mercenaries for the second time the other night. Maybe I’ll finish it this time. No, I am not getting an Xbox 360 when they first come out. It can wait.
I’m looking forward to the new Harry Potter, King Kong, The Chronicles of Narnia, and something else I can’t think of right now.
If you own a PS2, you might want to look here.

I went to see Serenity tonight and I thought it was pretty good. There were some funny parts and the action was good. I have a feeling that I would have been more into it if I had seen the series. Maybe I’ll rent it from Netflix.
I’ve become a Joss Whedon fan all of sudden. I have seen a few episodes of Buffy and Angel, but I never got into them that much. I plan on checking out the first season of Buffy in the near future. And I hear there are plans to make a Spike movie…

It’s not really surprising at this point, but UPN has now officially cancelled Star Trek: Enterprise. Too bad.

There is a new miniseries making it’s debut tonight at 8 CST on Sci Fi Channel called Legend of Earthsea. It’s based on books by Ursula K. Le Guin. The series stars Shawn Ashmore (X-Men), Kristen Kreuk(Smallville), Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon), and Isabella Rossellini (drawing a blank here), among amothers.
Although most Sci Fi original movies that I’ve seen parts of are very bad, their miniseries are usually very good. If this one is only half as good as Taken, it’ll still be worth watching.
I’ve never read any of the books, but I’m going to give the series a try.
