Guild Wars

I spent a little time tonight playing in Guild Wars World Preview Event. It seems like a decent game so far. It’s weird, but fun to play. The preview lasts for only 3 days (Oct. 29-31), so get it now if interested.

San Andreas

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was released earlier this week and I bought a copy even though I had said that I would hold off buying it for a while. It’s a fun game so far. One thing going around is that some people are saying that they won’t play the game because the main character is black. That just seems ridiculous to me. I think the main characters in most video games that I play are white, but I really don’t think about that sort of thing. I admit that when I’m given the ability to customize my character, I do tend to make them look somewhat like me. But that’s because I want to play as a projection of myself, not because I don’t like playing white characters.

Bush

I saw this funny video of President Bush that was recorded when he was governor of Texas. He seems pretty proud of himself. You can watch the video here.

While you’re at it, take a look at Eminem’s new video called “Mosh”.

If either of the links are broken, you can probably find the videos somewhere else. I fixed the Google search to the left.

Ouch!!!

The NCAA finally laid the smackdown on the MSU football program. It took them long enough to make a ruling. The program is on probation for 4 years and is banned from postseason play this year (not that we were expecting to make it to the postseason anyway). They also reduced the number of scholarships and recruiting visits over the next 2 years.

You can read the ESPN article here.

Mistaken Identity

Apparently someone that has the same name as I do also delivers The Commercial Dispatch around here. For some reason a lot of customers have been trying to reach him today, so I’ve been taking a lot of calls for him since I got home from work.

I get calls every once in a while from people around here looking for someone with the same name. It seems like wherever I worked or been in school, there’s usually at least one other person with the same name. The former fire chief of this town has the same name as me. He was fired and convicted on embezzlement or something like that a few years ago. A lot of people call here looking for him.

A couple of years ago a representative from Spiegel with a Caribbean accent kept calling me about some bill that I hadn’t paid even though I’ve never had an acount with them. She was really aggressive and kept telling me that I really needed to just go ahead and pay the bill even though I tried to explain that I really wasn’t who they were looking for. After asking some questions, I found out that the person they were looking for was a man in his 50’s that lived in a town about 30 miles north of here.

A couple of months ago Citi Financial called me many times about a loan that I had supposedly taken out in 2002. I explained my mistaken identity problems to one representative and I told her that I don’t have an account with Citi Financial. They kept calling anyway. I got annoyed so one afternoon I decided to keep calling them until I got a person who was willing to make sure that they wouldn’t call me again. It turns out that they had mistaken me for someone who lives in Starkville, just on a street that I had never lived on.

Go State

The town is still buzzing about Mississippi State’s upset win over Florida on Saturday. We were last in the nation in offense but managed to score more than we had scored in the previous 4 games combined. I mean, we lost to Maine, a I-AA team. And Vanderbilt, which isn’t much better. Croom was looking very excited after the game and the fans just had to bring the goalposts down. An interesting fact is that this is the only stadium in the SEC in which Steve Spurrier never won a game. FL has lost 4 straight games in Starkville.

They wouldn’t stop talking about the game on the news and on ESPN. There was a lot of speculation on Ron Zook’s future at FL. Losing more than 2 or 3 games is just unacceptable there (he’s 20-13 overall). Well, this morning it was announced that Ron Zook has been fired, but he will finish the season. I wonder if they’ll try to get Spurrier back.

On a side note, I heard some things about Maine’s trip to Starkville. On the day of the game, the players were so excited because they got a police escort to the stadium. They had never had one before. Also, they said that there were more people tailgating at our game than they have in attendance at one of their games. And we lost to them.

Update: It looks like Steve Spurrier will be talking to FL about getting his job back. Something about him just rubs me the wrong way.

More Evercrack

It’s official. Everquest II will be shipping on Nov. 8, which is a week earlier than previous estimates. It looks like they’ll be getting a headstart on World of Warcraft. Though they still have some problems to fix, Sony thinks they’ll be taken care of by then. I can’t wait.

Update: It looks like Nov. 22 is the official release date for World of Warcraft.

Gotta Love Live TV

Sunday, October 24th, 2004 2 comments

A lot of people say that Saturday Night Live isn’t as funny as it used to be (I tend to agree), but when I was watching last night I saw something really funny. And it wasn’t even intentional.

Ashlee Simpson was supposed to be performing her second song of the night, but the vocal track for her first song started playing. Her band tried to cover for her by playing the first song again, but she just walked off stage. Eventually, SNL went to commercial. I was wondering if she would come out at the end with the cast and she did. However, she blamed the screwup on her band saying that they played the wrong song. Today I read a quote that she made a while back saying that she would never lip-synch. OOPS!!! How do you come back from that? Some of my friends know how much I get “annoyed” by some of these young pop divas. I just couldn’t help but laugh when I saw that “performance”.

Of course the clip is now on the internet. You can watch the clip for yourself by clicking here. It’s 2.89 MB.

Update 10/26: This morning on The Today Show she said that she had acid reflux disease so her voice wasn’t strong that night. She said that it was the first time she used a backup track (even though lots of others do it). Her manager (her dad) insisted that she do it so she wouldn’t sound bad. Her drummer pushed the wrong button, so it really was her band’s fault. I guess I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt.

Whining

I like to play video games a lot, but there are people out there who play way too much. One of the worst things about playing games online is that there are little kiddies out there who you can’t even begin to compete against. I think a lot of this comes from many hours of gameplay. These people know all the tricks to playing the game. They memorize the location of everything on the map (weapons, spawn points, hiding places, etc). Even when I used to play more, I wouldn’t have remembered most of that. I guess that’s why I didn’t do well most of the time.

I played in The Screen Savers LAN Party last night. We played the Battlefield 1942 Desert Combat Mod and I was terrible. I didn’t get any kills and I had died about 10 times when I last checked the score. Maybe one day I’ll find a game that I’m good at.

Season 1 DVD’s

Thursday, October 21st, 2004 No comments

I’m pretty sure that I originally heard about this somewhere else, but my memory isn’t as good as it used to be. Anyway, Amazon.com is now offering the first season DVD’s for the following TV shows for $14.99:

So head over there and get some deals. There may be more that I didn’t find. I think I’m getting 24 since I never saw the entire first season.
