Stack Overflow Problem Solved…I Think

Friday, September 7th, 2007 2 comments

I think I may have solved the “Stack overflow at line: 1590” problem. If I include a picture of the cover of a game, movie, or book I usually link it to the Amazon page for that item. I don’t typically advertise it, but the link is there. Amazon also gives you a piece of code that you can use to display a more information about that product if a someone mouses over the link. Lately, I’ve stuck that code into my entries when I’ve remembered. Apparently, there were 2 times in August 2007 when I did that. The monthly archive pages put all of the entries for that month together, so the code shows up twice in the archives for that month. It looks like having that show up twice may have been what caused the error. It really only needs to show up once per page, so I’ll use it on a per page basis and not a per entry basis. I may just get rid of it altogether.

By the way, the code I’m talking about begins with an opening “script” tag and ends with a closing “noscript” tag.

Stack Overflow

Something about the August 2007 archive page causes the error “Stack overflow at line: 1590” in IE7. The keeps coming back every time I click the Ok button, so I have to go into the Task Maganer and shut down IE. At least I don’t have to restart the whole system. I haven’t had any problems so far with Firefox or Safari (imagine that) and the other archives I checked are okay. It’s not something that I’m doing on purpose. When I get a chance I’ll try to figure out what’s causing it.

Update, 9/7
I did find out what was causing the problem for me at least. It looks like it was some Amazon.com code. I wrote about it in this entry.

Just a Little Something

Safari for Windows…ouch! At least they are patching it.

I got bored with Titan Quest. Too much of the same old thing and not getting much out of it. It all just kind of blurred together. No use in sticking with a game I’m not enjoying just to say I completed it.

I started back reading Summer of the Monkeys. I got bored with it too. Maybe it’ll pick up. If not, I’m going back to Stephen King.

My 10-year high school reunion is the first weekend in August. I think I’m going.

I just got a sudden, strange craving for spaghetti. Time for lunch.

Wow! I’m using Safari for Windows. Somehow it’s exciting to me. I wonder when they’ll make iCal available to us Windows users :).

New Computer Annoyance

Thursday, May 24th, 2007 No comments

One bad thing building a new computer is having to install all the software you like to use. Usually whenever I have to reinstall Windows the first thing I do is download all those Windows updates. Then I’ll install a few programs I use a lot right away and install other programs as I need them. Traditionally the first software to get put on my machines are Microsoft Office, chat programs, photo editing software, and maybe some media players. Sooner or later I would get around to reinstalling games. These days I don’t chat online or edit photos much so I don’t have an urgent need for them. Before I replaced my hard drive at the beginning of the year, I took screenshots of my Program Files directory so I would have a list of the stuff installed on my machine. That list got neglected and eventually thrown away.

The “important” software I’ve installed so far is iTunes, Office, Gmail Notifier, Xfire, and Titan Quest. Maybe I’ll have an install marathon this weekend…or maybe not.

Tomato Firmware

Monday, April 23rd, 2007 No comments

I’ve had a Linksys wireless router for about to two years now. The Linksys firmware is limited. I’ve known for a while that it is possible to install third-party firmware, but I’ve been hesitant to do. I finally decided to go ahead and give it a try. The firmware that I decided to use was Tomato Firmware. All I had to do was use the firmware update option in the default firmware. I haven’t played around with Tomato much, but what I’ve seen so far is cool. I’m mostly interested in the bandwidth usage monitor.

One of the main reasons I decided to change the firmware was that I wanted to monitor our monthly bandwidth usage. I’ve heard about ISPs limiting how much bandwidth you can use. Although my ISP doesn’t do so, out of curiosity I wanted to see how much our household uses. I normally download at least 2 or 3 shows from iTunes each week.

So far I’m not having any problems with the new firmware. I hope that continues.

Browser Wars

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006 1 comment

The final release version of Internet Explorer 7 came out last week and Mozilla Firefox 2.0 should be available today.

I jumped on the bandwagon back when Firefox first started becoming popular. I even tried to encourage people myself to use Firefox instead of IE. After I had been on the bandwagon for I while I gradually started shifting back to IE. Eventually it got to the point where the only time I would use Firefox was in situations where I wanted to make use of the tabbed browsing feature. I don’t think I ever took full advantage of Firefox’s features. The only extension I ever really used was IE View, which is used to open pages in IE when they won’t display correctly in Firefox.

When I tried one of the early beta versions of IE 7, some of the websites that I frequently visit wouldn’t display properly, so I uninstalled it. I didn’t see those kinds of problems in beta 3 and the release candidates, so I eventually made the switch back to IE. Simple things like the inclusion of tabbed browsing and RSS discovery pretty much won me over. Now I rarely use Firefox, which may make me an exception among computer-knowledgeable people. In the techie community, it seems like you’re looked down on if you use IE. Many techies automatically assume that IE users don’t know much about computers.

Early on many made the argument that Firefox is more secure, but now it seems that might not necessarily be the case. Quite honestly, I’m not very worried about Internet security. I worry about it as much as I worry about falling down a flight of stairs. I know what’s safe and what’s not safe to do online. I don’t go to many weird sites. I have anti-virus software, spyware removers, and firewalls so I think I’m doing a decent amount to keep myself safe. As far as someone using an exploit to take over my machine, I don’t even think about that.

Am I just being blissfully ignorant or what?

I am enjoying my time in Azeroth. Somehow, it’s better than Starkville. I like the paladin and druid equally at this point. My only problem is that sometimes I have trouble getting into the game. From what I’ve heard, that is a common problem.

I signed up for a one week free trial of DDO. I just have to download it. Unless it takes an incredibly long time to download, I’ll be playing it sometime this weekend.

It looks like Xfire is being bought by Viacom. I remember when I first heard about it on TechTV, back when it was still TechTV. It couldn’t have been too long after Xfire first started up. If only I could remember to run Xfire every time I play a game. If anybody uses Xfire, my screen name is longklaw.

I decided to try Internet Explorer Beta 7 for a little while. I know it sounds risky, but I wanted to try it. I’m ok with IE’s new look. It reminds me a lot of Netscape 8 for some reason. I’m really glad that it has tabbed browsing. That feature is the only one I wish IE6 had. Of all the web sites I went to, there was only one that looked weird when I viewed it using IE7. After using it for a little while I decided it was time to uninstall IE7 and course IE6 froze up every time I tried to use it. Thank goodness for system restore.

Final Fantasy VII – Advent Children finally came out on DVD yesterday. I went to Sam Goody and picked up a copy. I’ll probably be watching it in the next few days. The manager at Sam Goody told me that I had been shopping there as long as he had been manager there, which is a long time. He said that I was one of those customers he expects to see there at least once a week. Though that used to be true and I have started back shopping there recently, I don’t go to Sam Goody nearly as much now that we have a GameStop here in Starkville. Still, it was nice to know that he appreciated my bu$ine$$.

The spambots have found me in my new home. [sarcasm]I am so thrilled about that.[/sarcasm]
