Life is Good

September just flew by, didn’t it? It started out with P.A.X., which I’ve already written about. The next weekend was the first ever Rose-City Comic-Con. I went in not expecting much, but my expectations were somewhat exceeded. There were a lot more people than I expected. There were people in costumes, but the quality wasn’t as good as they were at P.A.X. and San Diego Comic-Con. I shouldn’t say it, but most of the people wearing tight costumes shouldn’t have been in tight costumes. Richard Hatch and Noah Hathaway were there signing autographs and they had their own panels. There were booths set up with some interesting stuff. I bought some comics and some artwork that I need to hang and take pictures of. The only panels I went to was a Star Trek anniversary panel and a Doubleclicks panel. I had never seen The Doubleclicks perform, but I had heard much about them. I really enjoyed it. I did everything on day one. When I left I figured I had done everything I needed to and decided not to go back for day two. My personal highlight of the con was that Matt Fraction and his wife Kelly Sue DeConnick were there signing autographs. When it was finally my turn to speak to them, someone else started talking to her, so I really only got to speak to him. I can live with that. I’ve gotten used to being around celebrities over the past year and half or so, so I don’t usually get nervous anymore. I got nervous around Matt Fraction. He was really cool though.

The next weekend I got to see Oregon play Tennessee Tech down in Eugene. I got a call the week before from my dentist’s office saying that they had a drawing for the tickets and my name was pulled. Awesome! I didn’t even know I was in a drawing. I figured someone couldn’t go and they decided to give the tickets away, which was pretty much confirmed at the game. The drive down there was about 2 hours. There were a lot of other Oregon fans making the trip down. Driving through the middle of nowhere Oregon is a lot like driving through the middle of nowhere Mississippi except that there were hills. At one point I saw a vehicle coming down on a parachute. I loved the University of Oregon campus and the game day atmosphere was great. I tailgated with my dentist and his friends and father before the game. I had a great time at the game itself. The Ducks won 63-14. The trip back took over 3 hours because of traffic.

I got a lot of cool stuff done and work and a made some new friends, whom I’m sure I’ll be hanging out with on a regular basis. Even Reese has gotten to social a lot more lately.

Life is good.

Legion

LegionLegion by Brandon Sanderson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I like this short, interesting book. It has an cool concept.

The main character is called Legion. He has a mental condition that causes him to hallucinate other people with He uses these skills to help him out with his job. In this book, he’s hired to investigate the theft of a camera that can take pictures of the past.

I don’t mind a short story. This novella is 80-something pages. I just think Sanderson could have done more with it. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a sequel if this one is successful.

PAX 2012

This weekend I went to PAX for the first time. PAX is the Penny Arcade Expo, and it’s a convention devoted to nothing but gaming. I guess I didn’t know what I was getting into because I don’t hear as many people talk about it as San Diego Comic-Con. I figured I would have a good time, but it was many times better than I thought it would be.

I drove to Seattle Thursday night after working at home for the day. I didn’t know that anybody I knew was going until the week of the con, so I had already found roommates on the hotel share thread on the PAX forums. This was a mistake. I should’ve just ponied up the money to get a room by myself. The guy who booked the room asked for my share of the money soon after I responded to his post because he was short on money. When I got to the hotel, we didn’t have a room because his card got declined. He said that he was getting a direct deposit around midnight from his job and we would have a room then. He was there with his online gaming group. They were split into 3 rooms. Our room had 5 people and the other two rooms had 4 each. These people were freaking weirdos, and that’s coming from me. I hope they don’t see this. They even admitted that they were strange and apologized for how strange they were. The guys in my room were okay, but the others in their extended group were out there. I left my stuff in one of the other rooms and we went to a bar while we waited to get our room. As I expected, his money wasn’t available at midnight. He asked me if I had a credit card that I could that I could use and he would forward me the money later. I said something vague like “I can’t do it”, but the truth was I just didn’t want to. I thought about getting my own room somewhere nearby. I guess he found someone else willing to use their card. We finally got into our room around 1AM. One guy snored so loudly that it was hard to sleep. I think I got about 2 hours of sleep that night. At least somebody called him out on that. Not that it did any good.

The next day I got up to go the convention center. I had an idea of which panels I wanted to see, but I didn’t know what else I would end up doing. My roommates had talked about getting up early to get in line to play games, but I didn’t really know what they were talking about and I wasn’t really interested. When I got to the lobby, I asked the front desk to call me a cab. I saw some guys in Telltale Games shirts outside and they got in the first cab that came. It turns out that was supposed to be my cab. They invited me to share the cab with them and they paid for it. Neat, huh? When I got to the convention center, I just followed the flow of people. I ended up in the line for the Exhibition Hall where you can view and play games and see other stuff. While we waited in line here and everywhere else, the staff gave us stuff to do and entertained us. Comic-Con could learn something from this. I decided I wasn’t going to try to play any games because I didn’t want to wait a long time to play a demo I could play in a few months. Mostly, I walked around and watched other people play. I heard the wait to play Borderlands 2 was around 8 hours. I focused a lot on the cosplayers and props/decorations. I did see one of the Telltale guys I shared a cab with at the Telltale booth. The whole weekend I played maybe 2 or 3 games, but I did get cards with codes for games. I didn’t get much schwag other than this. There was so much to see. I tried to at least walk past every table. I spotted some guest stars from Supernatural at one point. Between visits to the Exhibition Hall I went to a couple of panels, like the Destructoid Live panel. I went to a party that night and had a great time.

The second day wasn’t as interesting because I had seen the Exhibition Hall. I went to the Major Nelson Live panel. There was stuff going on all over the convention center. Even though I had seen much of it the previous day, I was still discovering a lot of things. I found a dark arcade (the way it should be) and I played some board games. I really want to get into board and card games now. People were playing them in dedicated rooms and on the floor while in line. I bought 1 game at the convention and I’ve bought another 1 since I got back. I ended up going to a Harmonix panel late that because I wanted to sit down for a while and I didn’t want to go back to my room yet. It ended up being the best panel I saw the entire weekend. Right when I was about to leave the convention center for the day, I stumbled across the console freeplay room where they had tons of consoles setup and you could checkout games to play. I wish I had known about this sooner, because I would’ve spent a lot of time here.

I decided to come home Sunday instead of Monday morning. I had seen everything I needed to see and I wanted to give myself more time to recuperate. Also, I didn’t want to spend another night in that room. I was thinking about going to a popular museum in Seattle, but I’ll have to do that next time.

I had a great time at PAX. It’s a lot more relaxed that Comic-Con. I did learn a few lessons. Never go in blind on the roommate situation. That threatened to put a damper on the weekend and I’m glad it didn’t. Also, I shouldn’t go to cons alone. It’s a lot less awkward when you know someone there and have someone to hang with. I either need to make more friends who like to go to these things or convince more of my current friends to go. Lastly, this isn’t really a lesson, but I need to dress up for a con one time. I think it would be a lot of fun. I’m glad that I’m fortunate enough to be able to go on these little adventures. I’m looking forward to the next one.

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again

The Hobbit, or There and Back AgainThe Hobbit, or There and Back Again by J.R.R. Tolkien
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve been wanting to re-read this and the Lord of the Rings for the past few years. I figured this was a good time to do it since the movie is coming out in December.

I’m not sure what to say other than it’s still a great book. I didn’t remember much of what happened. It’s been a while since I’ve been exposed to this story. I watch the movie trilogy every year, but I haven’t read this one in a while.

The only part I don’t really like it the singing. Thankfully, there’s not much in the book.

Portlandia/Fiona Apple

Not long ago I saw online somewhere that Portlandia was looking for extras for Season 3. I filled out the online form and included the 2 pictures they wanted: a head shot and a body shot. I didn’t think there was any chance of being picked, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to try. I really enjoy watching the show. Wednesday afternoon I got a call asking if I could come early the next morning to be in a sketch. Of course I said “Yes”. They told me what to wear and later that night they sent an email telling me where to be and when to be there. I got there super early, but it wasn’t long before other extras started to arrive. Everybody was really nice. I had a great time. I signed an NDA that I didn’t read, so I’m going to play it safe and not go into any details now. Maybe more after the episode airs. Their seasons usually start in January, so I assume you’ll see it around that time. Hopefully, I’ll be on screen and won’t look too bad.

Later that night I went to see Fiona Apple in concert. The opening act was pretty lame. He played nothing but slow, mellow songs and even joked about that. I almost fell asleep because I hadn’t gotten much sleep over the previous few days. Once he finished, we had to wait about 45 minutes before Fiona came on stage. I was getting restless and it was getting late. When she came on she explained that she was late because she had just had her period. Anyway, she put on a really great show. There was was only one song that she didn’t play that I wanted to hear. She’s a weird one, but she’s good.

Eureka’s End

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012 4 comments

Last night my favorite show, Eureka, aired its final episode. I’ve always said that it’s not the best show, but it’s just plain fun. That’s what made it my favorite. It was nice to have some fun sci-fi to watch along with the gritty, depressing stuff. In the 5 years or so that I’ve owned a DVR, it’s always been prioritized in the #1 position ahead of sci-fi and non-sci-fi shows like LOST, Battlestar Galactica, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, etc.

I started watching Eureka in the summer of 2007 on DVD before the second season started. I knew about it during the first season, but hadn’t seen it except for a few seconds while I was flipping through the channels. I have this memory of Sheriff Carter in the woods. I know that doesn’t really narrow it down. The only time I mentioned it here was not long after I first started watching. I’ve enjoyed watching the show every season. Not every episode was great, but they were all at least pretty good as far as I remember. I even switched to using Degree deodorant was because of the creative tie-in they had in season 3.

I was very satisfied with the finale last night. We had the same familiar crisis-of-the-week story along with references previous seasons and resolution to the various character threads. The sheriff’s trip through memory lane was great. I’m just glad it got a chance to wrap things up considering how it was suddenly canceled.

With Eureka ending, there aren’t any truly sci-fi shows on Syfy. There’s not much sci-fi left on TV in general. I hope something as imaginative and fun as Eureka comes along soon.

This is cool! It’s a modernized retelling of Batman’s origin. There are a few interesting spins on the Batman mythology. Give it a read if you like Batman.

Fun Week

Sunday, July 1st, 2012 2 comments

After many weeks of doing nothing but going to work, watching TV, working out, shopping, and going to see movies, I started to get out and enjoy Portland again this week. A lot of the events that I bought tickets for weeks or months in advance are starting take place now.

On Wednesday I went to a Foster the People concert. FTP is my favorite new band over the past year or so. Their first album is one that I can listen to all the way through without skipping any songs. The concert was outside and the weather was perfect. There was lots of skin on display, and I love seeing lots of skin. A singer named Kimbra opened up. She was good. The next performer was Mayer Hawthorne, who I liked a lot better. He has more of a soul kind of sound. After a while the songs started to sound alike, but I definitely want to give him another listen. FTP was last, of course, and they were SO GOOD!!! They played most, if not all, of their first album and some songs I didn’t recognize. They left the stage without playing “Pumped Up Kicks”, so everybody knew there would be an encore. When they did play “Pumped Up Kicks”, they changed the ending to make it sound like a techno song. Great concert!

On Thursday night I went to see Aziz Ansari perform. He plays Tom on Parks and Recreation. A comedienne name Chelsea Peretti opened up. She was pretty good, but I was eager for Aziz to get on stage. His act was very funny! My favorite part was when he talked about meeting President Obama.

On Friday night, I went to see the 80s Room. I learned about this event from Brian. Basically, a PSU student started collecting 80s TV commercials. He categorized them and showed some of them that night. I actually recognized some and the jingles from a few others. It was a really fun snapshot of the 80s.

On Saturday night, I went to see Patton Oswalt. This was at the same place I saw Marc Meron. I think I went online and bought tickets the moment the show was announced. I was close for the Meron show, but this time I was right in front of the stage. It was great. Both the opening act (I can’t remember his name) and Patton Oswalt spoke to me during the show. I kept noticing them looking at me. Before the show when I had to sign my name saying that I received my tickets, I saw the names Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, and Corin Tucker at the bottom of the list. Google them if you don’t know who they are. I didn’t get to look for them, but I overheard someone say they saw Fred Armisen. Awesome show!

I was so exhausted last night. I must really be getting old. I want to stay home every night for the next week, but I think I have stuff on my calendar.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The Perks of Being a WallflowerThe Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I decided to read this a few weeks back when the trailer for the movie was released and I saw how excited everyone was about it. I’ve seen it listed on so many Facebook profiles under favorite books, but I had never been tempted to read it.

It’s a good book. It’s presented as a series of letters written by the main character, Charlie, to some unknown person. Charlie is a very introverted and feels lonely after the death of best friend. The letters chronicle Charlie’s first year in high school.

It’s was published by MTV in 1999 and I can see why a lot of young people like it. Give it a try.
